Display Screen Equipment (DSE)

Health Surveillance

There is no specific requirement for DSE related Health Surveillance however the law says that employers must arrange an eye test for display screen equipment (DSE) users if they ask for one and provide glasses if an employee needs them only for DSE use. However DSE users are not obliged to have such tests performed.

The test will include a test of vision and an examination of the eye. For the purpose of the DSE Regulations, the test should take account of the nature of the user’s work, including the distance at which the screen is viewed.

When staff ask for an eye test, employers should offer an examination by an Optometrist or Doctor with suitable qualifications.

The College of Optometrists provides the following guidance (Guidance Document L26) for examining patients who work with display screen equipment or computers;
